Killer Whales Sighting in Monterey Bay

Recently, people on boats in Monterey Bay saw a group of killer whales, also known as orcas, having fun in the water. However, one whale caught attention because it was carrying a dead black seabird in its mouth, which some people found disturbing.

Experts say this behavior could be just play, practice for hunting, or even a way for a mother whale to teach her young. Nicholas Raheim from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) explained that orcas are social animals that often hunt together, much like wolves.

This sighting is part of a larger trend. Another interesting event was the spotting of a rare all-white killer whale, nicknamed “Frosty.” This whale has been seen from Ensenada to British Columbia. Experts believe Frosty’s unusual color could be due to a genetic condition called leucism or a disorder known as Chediak-Higashi syndrome.

The Monterey Bay Whale Watch group says that this season has brought many exciting whale sightings, and there will likely be more to come as October continues.
