Kazan, Russia — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Kazan to take part in the 16th BRICS Summit, which will run from October 22nd to 24th. This is Modi’s second visit to Russia this year, following a trip to Moscow in July.
Upon his arrival, Modi was welcomed by members of the Indian community in Kazan. The summit will include the five founding BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—as well as new members like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
Before leaving, Modi mentioned how important BRICS is for discussing global issues. He also pointed out that the group has become more inclusive with the addition of new members.
During the summit, leaders will talk about key topics such as boosting economic cooperation, using national currencies for trade, and sustainable development—an issue Modi is passionate about, especially regarding climate change. There is also a chance for Modi to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss ongoing border negotiations.
In a positive move, Russia released 85 Indian nationals from its military camp before the summit. The event is well-organized, with strict security measures in place. Delegates must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test to attend.
This summit is not just for BRICS members; it also includes representatives from nearby countries and other nations from the global South, like Sri Lanka. As global tensions rise, many will be watching the discussions for their impact on international cooperation and development.
