Yaoundé, Cameroon – President Paul Biya is back in Cameroon after spending several weeks abroad, leading to concerns about his health. The 91-year-old leader arrived at Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport on Monday, where he was warmly welcomed by supporters wearing shirts with his picture, who celebrated with chants and drumming.
Biya had been out of the public eye since attending a summit in Beijing in early September. His long stay in Geneva raised worries, prompting the government to say on October 8 that he would return soon.
As he arrived, large welcome posters were displayed in the capital, Yaoundé. Biya has been in power for over 41 years, making him the second longest-serving leader in Africa.
His absence was noticeable at international events, as he did not attend the United Nations General Assembly or a French-speaking countries summit while away. With upcoming presidential elections next October, many are wondering if he will run again, as he has not named a successor.
While his return has reassured some supporters, questions about his health and future plans remain.
